"OUT OF THE ASHES THE MYSTICAL PHOENIX BIRD SHALL RISE"

Phoenixville, Pennsylvania 19460

Six municipalities make up the Phoenixville Area; Phoenixville Borough, Schuylkill, East Vincent, West Vincent, Charlestown and East Pikeland Townships. Phoenixville is located with close proximity to Philadelphia, King of Prussia, West Chester and Wilmington, DE using regional highways 476, 76, 202, and 422.

Area points of interest include Valley Forge National Park, Marsh Creek State Park, French Creek State Park, Lancaster County, PA.

The Borough of Phoenixville was formally incorporated in 1849.  Prior that it was a settlement where a nail works factory owned by Louis Wernweg was located due to the close proximity to the Hopewell Furnace and the Schuylkill River.  The name Phoenixville was derived by Louis Wernwegs vision of the ancient mythical Phoenix bird rising from the flames of the furnace. In 1847 the iron works stopped making nails and focused on iron needed for railroads.  The iron works was sold to David Reeves and Samuel Whitaker in 1829 and from then until 1944 the Phoenix Iron Works and later the Phoenix Steel Company continued to grow through the ownership of the Reeves family.

The steel company has since shut down but its place in American History abounds. Steel from the mill in Phoenixville can be found in the Washington Monument, the first elevated train track in New York, and the Griffen Cannon from the Civil War.

The Phoenix has risen again in Phoenixville. The foundry building from the old iron works has been rehabilitated into the Schuylkill Valley Vistors Center, hosting a museum dedicated to preserving the heritage and history of the town, as well as, a soon to come entertainment venue.

Downtown Phoenixville offers antique shops, boutiques and many fine restaurants offering a diversified bill of fare.
